How do I know for sure I’m saved?
Because God guarantees that whoever believes in Him has eternal life. God can’t lie (Tit 1:2).
In using the word “saved,” I assume you mean “eternal security” or in other words, being saved from the lake of fire. I clarify this because the word “saved” in Scripture has multiple meanings, not just one.
So, let’s look in God’s Word for assurance of your eternal salvation. Pick any one of the scriptures below and let God declare it to you. Believe what He says. According to the Lord, you only need to believe in Him to receive eternal life. Nothing else is required.
John 3:16, John 5:24, John 6:35, John 6:39-40, John 11:25-27, Eph 2:8-9, 1 John 5:1
Well, what does it mean to believe in Him?
It means you believe that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son—Jesus Christ—so that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.
When you believe this applies to you personally, by faith, you have eternal life and you are putting your trust in Christ Jesus for your eternal security.
The truth is that eternal life is provided freely by faith and that no conditions, works, or anything else is required to have this wonderful life. And it’s important to know that you don’t receive eternal life in “yourself”; rather, eternal life is bestowed in Christ. You simply can’t have eternal life without Him.
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:11-12
In other words, in and of yourself, you have not been given eternal life as a “thing.” God didn’t send you a gift in the mail with eternal life inside it. He gave His Son to be your Gift. That’s why eternal life is bestowed in Christ. Eternal life is not something you have on your own. You only have eternal life because you are now in Christ…you are in His hands and are assured of eternal security (John 10:28-29). Thus, you only have eternal life if you have God’s Son. If you don’t have the Son of God, then you are without God’s life.
The Naysayer doesn’t believe this because he thinks there’s more to it than what God has spoken in His Word. He is questioning his eternal assurance because lots of misinformation creates confusion in the church today.
Here are the facts as fully supported in Scripture: Immediately upon believing in Him by faith, that person has everlasting life that can never be taken away. You are born again and are a child of God the Father. You pass from death to life. This means that after all things pass away (heaven and earth) (Matt 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33) and then are made new (Rev 21:1-5), you will live with God Himself and the rest of God’s children in His Kingdom forever. Your eternal destination will not be the lake of fire. This is eternal salvation.
But before that eternal age begins, we are called to mature as believers in obedience and works. To continue on in faithfulness. Obedience or “works” or “conditions” are never a requirement for everlasting life, but are required for believers who will be rewarded with blessings of the fullness of life (His rest) before that time.
Jesus came not only to give us life but also an abundant life in all His fullness (John 10:10).
Eternal life is a free gift that can’t be taken away. Your reward (blessings of a fullness of life) is based on obedience. Your eternal security is guaranteed, but additional reward beyond that is not.
